Amy is a bright and artistic 18-year-old girl who has lymphoma, which means that instead of spending her time fully enjoying school and friendships among other things, she has to focus on fighting her illness and staying healthy. However, her diagnosis hasn’t affected her personality, nor has it taken away from her sense of ambition!
When Make-A-Wish® Colorado gave her the opportunity to have a wish granted, she immediately envisioned herself taking on the city that never sleeps: New York! The staff at Make-A-Wish Colorado listened to each of her detailed ideas for the trip and made it a reality!
Before her flight took off from Denver, she was able to sit in the cockpit with the pilot of the Southwest plane, which had her feeling special from the very beginning of the trip. From there things only got better! Once in NYC, she visited numerous restaurants, tried new food and even chatted with one of the owners about their similar love for the city. She was treated like royalty by the staff at the Red Door Salon & Spa, and by the Port Authority Police at the Statue of Liberty. She even got to tour her favorite nail polish company and they gifted her with over 90 new bottles of polish to try at home! She ended each night by arriving back at her hotel and talking with the hotel staff members who were eager to hear about everything she had seen and done.
One of the most memorable moments was when Amy visited The Rink at Rockefeller Center. The ice skating staff shut down the rink so Amy and her father could enjoy skating together on open ice, which is something they loved to do before her illness.
“We had such a great time. It was a great break from worrying about her illness,” said Amy’s mom. The entire family had an amazing, fun time on their vacation and will never forget the memories.
