Maya is a 12-year-old girl who races through life with never-ending energy. However, after receiving a bone marrow transplant, she had to put normal life on hold. Just when it seemed like there was no fun to be had, hope reemerged for Maya when she found out she was going to receive a wish from Make-A-Wish® Colorado!
Maya knew that for the perfect wish, it had to meet two very important requirements: it had to be a beach, and there had to be starfish. After much thought, Maya decided to visit Hawaii to stay at Aulani, a Disney® Resort & Spa, where she could run along the beach with Mickey and Minnie and do the hula with Goofy. The best part of her wish was taking surfing lessons. As she put it, “…by the end of the trip, I was really good.”
For Maya and her family, this trip was a total game changer, taking her out of the cloud of sickness and back into the life of a normal kid. “For five days I forgot all about treatment and hospital visits,” Maya said. “I forgot anything that had to do with being sick!”
Wishes like Maya’s have a lasting impact not only on the wish kid, but on the entire family. They give families hope through something to look forward to, and a joyous memory to look back on when the wish is over. They’re transformative and life-changing experiences for a child battling a critical illness.
