She shoots, she scores! The ball flies from Tashena’s finger tips and hits the net with a loud, swish! The Canon City High School Tigers are victorious!
Tashena is a 17-year-old who didn’t even let cancer interfere with her passion for basketball.
After being diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma in January 2013, Tashena’s friends and family worried about her health, her schooling, her sports and most of all, her life. However, even though she had weekly chemotherapy she kept up with her schoolwork and even attended basketball practice and games with her teammates.
“Sports are my life,” said Tashena. “And I wasn’t about to let cancer stand in the way of my passion for basketball – plus, my team needed me!”
When Tashena wasn’t undergoing chemotherapy, doing homework, or attending basketball practice, she was watching her favorite professional NBA team, the Denver Nuggets, play on TV. After Tashena was referred to Make-A-Wish Colorado she knew instantly what her one-true-wish would be – to meet the Denver Nuggets.
“I thought long and hard about my wish,” said Tashena. “I knew I wanted it to be something truly special and unique to me – something that was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”
Tashena and her parents received courtside seats to the game vs. the Minnesota Timberwolves. Before the game Tashena watched the team practice and met the players, including Danilo Gallinari, her favorite player.
Today, Tashena is in remission from cancer and happily playing basketball and softball for her high school. She visits the hospital every three months for scans and check-ups, but for the most part she is back to being a normal teenager.
“Thank you Make-A-Wish for providing me and my family with this unforgettable experience,” said Tashena. “It was a time for my family and I to bond over some amazing basketball!”
Tashena’s wish was made possible with the help of the Denver Nuggets, Pepsi Center, Kroenke Sports & Entertainment and Make-A-Wish Colorado.
