Creature Hub is a YouTube video sensation made up of characters (or Creatures) performing skits and posting to their YouTube channel. Little did the creators know that their number one fan, a 14-year-old boy named Roman from Washington, wished to meet them through Make-A-Wish.
Roman was diagnosed with Friedreich’s ataxia, a neuromuscular disorder that affects the nervous system and heart at the age of eight after his third grade teacher saw a change in his behavior at school. His teacher said Roman was acting different and seemed to be more clumsy than usual. Roman went to the doctor to see what was wrong and after a year and a half of procedures and tests, his doctor’s diagnosed him with the progressive disorder.
Now, 14, Roman is a typical teenage boy who loves to play video games and watch YouTube videos, especially videos created by his favorite YouTube characters, The Creature Hub.
“Roman loves to watch the Creature Hub videos on YouTube,” said Roman’s mother, Elisa. “The Creature Hub videos consist of 20-year-old guys creating skits that make Roman laugh and keep his mind distracted from his disorder.”
When Roman was referred to Make-A-Wish Alaska and Washington, he knew instantly what his wish was – to meet the creators of Creature Hub. After Make-A-Wish contacted the creators, Roman and his family flew to Colorado Springs, CO in August for his wish experience to unfold.
After pulling up to the Creature Hub creator’s home, Roman, his mother and his younger brother were greeted by Roman’s heroes and taken inside to film a new video skit with special guest, Roman!
“You could tell that the Creature Hub guys were very nervous,” said Elisa. “This was their first time helping grant a wish and you could tell how much they wanted to make this day extra special for Roman.”
Roman was a natural in the Creature Hub skit and the Creatures even included Roman’s younger brother, Julian in on the action. After hanging out for a while longer, they all rode together to Dave & Buster’s for lunch and games.
“It was very sweet to see the guys so attentive to Roman,” said Elisa. “I was an emotional wreck the whole day because I couldn’t believe how special they made us all feel. It was nice to see that there are still good people in this world.”
Roman and his family flew home to Washington a few days later, bringing home with them memories that will last a lifetime.
“Roman still keeps in touch with some of the Creatures and hopes to remain friends with them,” said Elisa. “Emotionally, I have seen a huge difference in my son since the wish. He feels extremely blessed and has been smiling since we left Colorado.”
