Three-year-old Oscar, Ozzie for short, had his life turned upside down when he was diagnosed with Rhabdomyosarcoma, a type of cancerous tumor in November 2012. He went from being active and carefree to being hospitalized on numerous occasions because of the treatments he endured on a weekly basis.
Although the treatments took a toll on Ozzie physically, his spirits and love for sports, specifically the Chicago White Sox®, stayed true.
When Ozzie was referred to Make-A-Wish® Colorado he knew that his wish had to involve sports in some shape or form. Ozzie decided that his wish was to have a sports themed backyard makeover complete with batting cage and putting green so he and his family “could play sports all day”.
“Ozzie has always loved sports, especially baseball,” said Ozzie’s mom, Robin. “During treatments we would talk about sports and get him excited for when he would be cancer free and able to play again like a normal 3 year old should be playing. That’s why his wish from Make-A-Wish Colorado was so special to our whole family.”
Ozzie’s wish was granted in September and his backyard is now complete with a batting cage, putting green and a variety of ball, bats, rackets, hats and gloves.
“When the going got tough, we would talk about Ozzie’s wish and how cool it would be to have the backyard transformed,” said Robin. “Thinking about the wish helped not only Ozzie, but our family get through the tough times and focus on the future.”
After 23 rounds of radiation and chemotherapy and surgery to remove the tumor, Ozzie finished his treatment and is now in remission.
“Now I can play baseball like Paul Konerko,” said Ozzie about his new backyard. “Thank you Make-A-Wish for making my wish come true.”
A very special thank you to Southwest Putting Greens for helping to install and enhance Ozzie’s wish experience.
