Speed, strength, stamina and accuracy. These are all skills that athletes hone and develop while putting in hours of practice to be the best they can be. However, the truly great athletes possess even more than just these raw skills. They are filled with determination, perseverance and tenacity amidst hardships. Sixteen-year-old Ethan demonstrates all these qualities of a standout athlete despite battling cancer.
Ethan’s cancer has undoubtedly been a challenge throughout his years, but success is about one’s ability to overcome adversity. When Ethan was offered the opportunity to have a wish granted by Make-A-Wish Colorado, he wished for own basketball court to continue improving his basketball skills.
Make-A-Wish Colorado passed the ball to Sport Court of the Rockies to help grant Ethan’s wish. Turns out, the owner of Sport Court of the Rockies was personally connected to Make-A-Wish because his brother was granted a wish years ago. He was eager to help achieve Ethan’s wish and was confident that his team could help build the court of Ethan’s dreams.
Ethan composed the original concept for his court and filled it with his personal touches, like the giant black mamba logo that represented his favorite player, Kobe Bryant. From there, Sport Court of the Rockies recommended a few enhancing components, like a rebounder net to return the ball to Ethan after he shoots so that he can practice without needing an extra player. Details like this made Ethan’s court perfect!
The first day on the court was a memory Ethan will treasure forever. After the unveiling, he played a pick-up game with his friends and family who have supported him throughout his long battle with cancer. Since then, Ethan has spent hours practicing his crossover, developing his dribble and making more memories… and three-point shots!
