Summer is Sara’s favorite time of the year because it means she can spend long days splashing in the pool and playing sports with her friends. Three years ago, Sara’s summer plans were interrupted when she was diagnosed with an inoperable cancer. Instead of her usual summer fun, she had to spend hours every week driving to and from the hospital for treatments and testing.
Hope entered these long days when Sara learned that her social worker had referred her to Make-A-Wish® Colorado and she would be granted a wish! During her treatments, Sara would pass the time by watching video after video of all of the fun activities offered on a Disney Cruise. There wasn’t a doubt in her mind that she wanted to visit the Bahamas on a big boat with all of her favorite characters, so that’s exactly what she wished for; to go on a Disney Cruise with her family!
During the four days on the magical ship, Sara “fell in love with the Kids’ Zone” where she was free to do what she wanted with other kids her age. Her family enjoyed Disney themed meals as they hopped between islands. Sara’s favorite stop was at Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay. She was able to play with Disney characters on the beach and jump in the crystal clear water to snorkel. Of course, Sara couldn’t spend a week without playing sports, so they filled their sunny days on the boat with shuffleboard and miniature golf.
Sara’s dad reflects that the wish was “the best thing for [their] family, at the most opportune time!” Sara can’t stop talking about all of the memories she made with her family onboard Captain Mickey’s ship! The trip continues to bring new joy to her life each time she reflects on the experience.
