Nicholas has always been captivated by U.S. history. After being diagnosed with a rare blood disorder, he spent countless hours escaping the hospital bed in the pages of U.S. history books. When given the opportunity to choose anything for his wish, Nicholas had his heart set on visiting Virginia to stand where the icons of history once stood.
Exploring James Fort in Jamestown, the first English settlement in America, was the perfect beginning for Nicholas’ wish trip. He met with the Jamestown Rediscovery archaeologists who invited Nicholas to join their team for the day. “It was so nice to see the excitement on Nicholas’ face,” Alida, Nicholas’ mom, shared, “Actually being in these places he had read and learned so much about.”
Day two, Nicholas didn’t need a tour guide to explore the sights of the Battle of Gettysburg. “He knows so much about it, he could tell us what happened at different places during the three days of fighting,” said Alida. Finally seeing the real cannons, weapons, and uniforms Nicholas had read about brought him tremendous joy. “His interest and curiosity for all things history were contagious and spread to his brother and sisters.” The trip allowed the entire family to have an escape. “As parents, we enjoyed every part of the trip, but seeing the excitement and light in Nicholas’ eyes is a memory we will cherish forever,” Alida reminisced.
