Jaidyn is a 5-year-old from Littleton who loves all things BOY! He enjoys playing with his toy trucks, watching the Broncos with his dad and watching Indiana Jones movies and reenacting the adventure scenes. He also really likes Disney movies and TV shows so much so that he has always wanted to go to the Walt Disney World® Resort to meet his favorite characters.
Jaidyn and his family had the trip all planned, but had to cancel after receiving some unexpected news. He was diagnosed with Wilms’ tumor in April 2012 after complaining of side pains. Jaidyn went to the doctor and had tests done to figure out the problem. After hearing the doctor’s diagnosis, Jaidyn’s dad Randy, was forced to cancel the trip, leaving Jaidyn devastated.
“He was crushed,” said Randy. “He was looking forward to riding the rides and meeting his favorite characters and didn’t understand why we had to cancel the trip.”
After receiving Jaidyn’s diagnosis, life for this family changed dramatically. Jaidyn needed his left kidney removed and needed radiation and chemotherapy treatments numerous times per week for several months.
“Raising a 5-year-old boy is hard enough without an added illness,” said Randy. “Even though he was sick he still tried to be a normal little boy. It was hard as a parent to see him try so hard to be a regular kid, but just couldn’t.”
One bright spot came when Jaidyn was referred to Make-A-Wish Colorado. When Jaidyn met with his wish grantors for the first time he was having a very good day. He was playing with his dog, running around the house and was very eager to show his wish grantors his awesome bedroom full of toys. Jaidyn also knew exactly what he wanted for his wish – a trip to Walt Disney World®
Resort – where he was supposed to go before getting sick.
Before going to Walt Disney World
® Resort, Jaidyn and his family attended school functions and assemblies for Mountain Vista High School in Highlands Ranch because they were raising money to help grant his wish through the Kids For Wish Kids® program.
“They treated Jaidyn like a rock star,” said Randy. “He did a professional photo shoot with students from the school and it still gives me goose bumps thinking of the whole school shouting his name at the assembly. It was very cool.”
During the 2012-2013 school year, Mountain Vista High School raised more than $22,000 for Make-A-Wish Colorado and granted Jaidyn’s wish to go to Walt Disney World®
Jaidyn’s wish became a reality a few months later when he and his family were wisked off to the most magical place on earth, Walt Disney World®
Resort. During his wish experience Jaidyn rode the rides and met his favorite characters. He also had the opportunity to stay at Give Kids the World® and went to Seaworld®.
“The rides were really fun,” said Jaidyn. “Mickey Mouse was pretty cool too. He gave me a really big hug and made me feel special.”
Today, Jaidyn is easing back into living a normal childhood. The trip to Walt Disney World®
Resort was more than just a vacation to Jaidyn. It symbolized the start of him gaining his strength back and being well enough to travel and play. Jaidyn was crushed when his family cancelled the original trip, but had so much fun during his wish and even said that he knows he is getting better because “my hair is growing back!”
