Diego's wish to go to the Walt Disney World® Resort

“From the moment the family arrived in Florida, a smile never left Diego’s face. ”

A little over a year ago, 15-year-old Diego was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. According to his mom, he had just not been himself.

When presented with the opportunity to have a wish granted by Make-A-Wish Colorado Diego wanted nothing more than to travel to the Walt Disney World® Resort and meet all of his beloved characters. His choice was easy as Diego loves everything Disney, including watching his favorite films every chance he gets.

From the moment the family arrived in Florida a smile never left Diego’s face. At one point, Diego lit up when he spotted Spiderman and quickly got out of his wheelchair as fast as he could so he could get the web slinger’s signature. Unfortunately, Diego was not quite fast enough, and he thought he had missed his opportunity. A Disney cast member saw Diego's disappointment and invited him to meet not just Superman, but all of the Superheroes! The Superheroes welcomed Diego with open arms, giving him their autographs and inviting Diego to participate in a Superhero photo shoot. He was the star of the picture!

Diego's favorite memory of his wish came after he finished enjoying the Star Wars ride. At this time, Diego was escorted back to the ride with a Disney cast member. Diego was in for an incredible surprise: there stood Darth Vader—his favorite character— and two Storm Troopers! With great excitement, Diego left his wheelchair to be closer the Darth Vader. As Diego stood in awe he was presented with a red lightsaber and asked if he would join Darth Vader’s Galactic Empire. Diego eagerly accepted and was so happy that he continues to share the story of his experience with everyone.

After the trip Diego's mom spoke of his experience, "For a week I had my son back. He was eating, he was walking, he was smiling, he was talking, he was the Diego that we had a year and a half ago."
