Kaitlyn was diagnosed with leukemia when she was only 18 months old. This took a toll on her entire family, drastically changing their lives and daily routines. Instead of having play dates and visits to the park, Kaitlyn and her family spent their time at the hospital for treatments and check-ups. It was a lifestyle that they dealt with and one that offered little respite.
When Kaitlyn was referred to Make-A-Wish, she was only 4 years old, but she knew exactly what she wanted for her wish. She wanted to go to Walt Disney World® Resort to meet her favorite characters.
“Disney World is the happiest place on earth,” said Kaitlyn. “It was a magical time for my family because it gave everyone a break.”
During her wish experience, Kaitlyn, her sister and her parents got to meet the many famous Disney® characters and go on the world-renowned rides.
“I vividly remember my mom and dad having to stuff socks in my shoes to make me tall enough for most of the rides,” said Kaitlyn. “We laughed and laughed – that was a very happy memory of mine.”
Kaitlyn’s wish was not just a typical family vacation - It was an opportunity to be a normal family and enjoy the little things in life that provide laughter and positivity regardless of the current situation.
When she was 5 years old Kaitlyn went into remission and remains cancer free to this day. She is now a freshman at Colorado State University studying to be a veterinarian. She has a passion for horses and competes in various riding shows around the state.
Looking back, Kaitlyn still remembers her laughter-filled wish as an experience that gave her the strength to fight her leukemia and win.
